One of the Important SEO Techniques is rel=canonical. Normally most of the people make some common mistake with rel=canonical. I will suggest you the actual technique and tips of using rel=canonical. It is important to plays an important role in the structure of your web site.

“rel=canonical” tag helps the search engine to recognize exact page available on the web. It helps to avoid duplication of pages, duplicate content, etc. Following are the SEO Tips & Tricks you must follow for canonical tag.

6 Practices for Using “rel=Canonical” tag

  • Where to Put Canonical: Canonical tag must be placed in the <head> of the web page, just below the Meta Tags i.e. Meta title, Meta description & keywords. If you placed the canonical tag somewhere else it will get ignored by the search engines.
  • You should use canonical tag only once in a web page. You should not put it more than one time otherwise it will create a mess.
  • Canonical to every URL: most of the people put canonical to each and every web pages but it is not recommendable because this practice is only done on basis of the content which are similar but not copied on a specific web page. You should decide yourself that which pages need to be considered for canonicalization.
  • Don’t put canonical tag on 404 pages.
  • Double check your original page, it must not contain “noindex” or “nofollow” tag in it.
  • Pre-define the version of your page which you want to show to the search engine. For e.g.with www (recommended) or without www.
